Intellectual Property - Protecting Your Ideas

Intellectual Property is a legal concept and term which refers to inventions, discoveries, processes, methods, materials, original data, and other creative or artistic works which may be protected by:

  • Copyright
  • The legal right to control the production, reproduction, publishing and selling of original work. (ie. literary, artistic, or musical work)

  • Patents
  • The exclusive legal right of an inventor to produce, market and sell an invention for a term of years.

  • Trademarks
  • An exclusive registered symbol or name distinctly identifying a manufacturer or distributor and which cannot legally be used by another.

The pages here help to explain the types of protection available, what can and can't be protected, which form of protection applies to your product or idea, and how to go about registering.

Many individuals and businesses are unfamiliar with Intellectual Property, and as such may find that they have a product or idea that they haven't even considered registering. By becoming familiar with the terms, contacts, and rules surrounding Intellectual Property in this section, you can ensure that your business is well protected.
