Picking Slip

A picking slip is a piece of paper that shows the goods that have been ordered. The picking slip is used by staff in the warehouse to pick the goods and ship them to the customer. Normally, the picking slip is included with the order, so that the customer can check that the right goods have been shipped.

Picking slips often also contain advanced features such as bar codes. A bar code makes the picking slip machine readable. A system can then be used to automatically verify the order. For example, picking slips may be scanned by a barcode scanner before the orders are shipped. The operator also scans the products that are shipped. If the products match the ones indicated on the picking slip, the order gets shipped out. Otherwise, an alarm may ring.

In online commerce, picking slips may be printed out directly form a website. This is normally the back-end of an online store. Picking slips may also be generated by other means, such as a POS system. Usually, picking slips are printed on nice paper and customised with the company’s logo and address details. Often, picking slips are printed on custom printed stationery. Sometimes, picking slips contain address labels that can be peeled off and put on a parcel. If a picking slip doesn’t contain a mailing label, then the mailing label may be printed out using a thermal printer when the picking slip is scanned.
