DSL (Digital Subscriber Line)
DSL or digital subscriber line is a commonly used type of
Internet connection that provides a relatively high amount of bandwidth over a
standard pair of copper wires. DSL digital subscriber line is set up on the
phone exchange and allows the user to use the same telephone line for data as
well as voice communication.
DSL digital subscriber line is available in symmetric as
well as asymmetric mode. A symmetric line provides the same bandwidth for
upload and download. This may be useful for companies that host a website
internally. On the other hand, an asymmetric digital subscriber line, or ADSL
connection, provides a different amount of bandwidth for upload and download.
Usually, more bandwidth is available for download. This can noticeably speed up
the Internet connection for average users who download a lot more data than
they upload.
DSL digital subscriber lines are enormously popular today.
They are available cheaply from many different providers. One requirement of a
digital subscriber line is that the telephone line is of good quality and not
to far away from the DSL telephone exchange.
